Brown Bag Presentation: The Influence of Effects and Phenomena on Citations

In this presentation we discuss four perspectives on citations (Self-expected Citations, Received Citations, Expected Citations, and Deserved Citations) and the factors that influence or bias citation counts in scholarship such as the Matthew and Podunk Effects. We argue that what is currently studied are not effects, but rather phenomena. We also outline four new effects/phenomena: the Self-confidence Effect/Phenomenon, the Narcissus Effect/Phenomenon, the Other-confidence Effect/Phenomenon, and the Flattery Effect/Phenomenon based on the differences between the different citation perspectives.
